The Truman Show - Scene Analysis
I chose this scene where Truman and his 'thought-to-be dead' father finally meeting each other. Truman, who thought he lost his father when he was young, claimed that he saw his dead father when he wasn't supposed to. I thought this scene was showing both emotional but also showing how the Truman Show is working. The director of the Truman Show, eventually put his father in the scene because Truman strongly believed that he saw his father and he wouldn't stop being suspicious about the show. But the most cruel thing was that Truman truly believed that his father was alive and loves him like he loves his father, but his father is just an actor who just pretends he is Truman's father and Truman doesn't know this.
The shots in this scene were decided by the director of the Truman Show himself, trying to make the moment emotionally both sad and glad to meet Truman's father to the audience who are watching. Truman's face closes up as he hugs his father, his face smiling, and very grateful to see his father. Also, they were filming behindTruman walking toward to his father, slowly, which made us and the scene feel more intense and expecting to see what's going to happen. Those various angles of shots in this scene made us feel not only surprised but like relieved.
The cuts in this scene were between Truman, the audience, and the editors filming the moment. These cuts were showing that even what's going to happen to Truman was all edited and decided by the editors of this show, and Truman has no choice but to accept them, since he doesn't know the truth about his whole life. Also, by showing the cuts of audience gasping and cheering when Truman finally faces his father, it makes that means audience who were watching the Truman Show had been sharing his feelings publicly after all. Even what Truman feels is watched by the people, not being able to see any privacy for Truman.
This moment when they were hugging each other, the director makes the music creator to put on a sad and emotional music to make the scene to be overwhelming to the audience who are watching. the combination of closing up to Truman's sobbing face and overwhelming music made this scene to be the climax.
